Steelers suddenly have a new injury to worry about after report breaks

Football

The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing to report to training camp in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, which is always a fun time of the year as fans get to see the team come together. It is an interesting time as position battles heat up and the lineups and rotations on each side of the football begin to take shake. While it is entertaining, it is also important for all of the players to stay healthy. Some teams around the league have already begun training camp, and there have been a few devastating injuries. Promising edge-rusher Nic Scourton of the Carolina Panthers tore his ACL, and there have been plenty of other minor injuries.

The good news for Steelers fans is that new head coach Mike McCarthy is probably going to put his players through a much less physical training camp than they are accustomed to from their time with Mike Tomlin. This will hopefully lead to fewer injuries and less wear and tear overall, but there are already some issues to pay attention to. Broderick Jones is still dealing with the neck injury that he suffered during the 2025 season, and it is fair to say that he is probably not at his playing weight or strength right now. It has been said that he is expected to land on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list to begin training camp.

Another player to keep an eye on that is going through some health issues is veteran defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day. Beat writer Ray Fittipaldo joined 93.7 The Fan on Friday and brought the injury up.

“Yeah, I think he is an established guy in the league,” Fittipaldo said. “Can play inside and outside. Got a little nicked up at the end of the spring. I’ll be watching the PUP list. Maybe he is on there with Jones, maybe it was just a minor thing. That happened at such a late juncture of the spring, we never really got an update. If he is healthy, he is going to be a part of that 6-7 man rotation that they plan to roll out there. Type of guy you want when you sign a veteran defensive lineman.”

Joseph-Day is a respected veteran in the NFL who has been a team captain before. He served in that role with the Los Angeles Chargers and he was a productive player with them. He spent the last two seasons with the Tennessee Titans, and he signed with Pittsburgh in free agency. Fittipaldo didn’t really expand on what the injury was, and it sounds like the team has not given an update.

The timing of this injury seemed to line up in a way that the fans would not know much about it. Fittipaldo reported that it happened at the end of the spring, which means there hasn’t been much media availability since. There seems to be a chance that the veteran defender could land on the PUP list, which would be a pretty big blow. He was an underrated signing in free agency and has plenty of experience. He should be expected to be a major piece of the defensive line rotation, so hopefully he is healthy when the team gets to Latrobe.

Football Steelers’ Sebastian Joseph-Day can still be ready by the start of the 2026 regular season

The way the PUP list works is that it is only used in camp, and players who are on the list can still be around the team. They can do everything besides practice. A player can get off of the PUP list by passing a physical and getting cleared. If that does not happen by the end of training camp, the player would be forced to miss the first four games of the regular season. Hopefully Joseph-Day shows up to Latrobe healthy, but if he doesn’t, he can still be ready by the start of the regular season.
