Drama as MP Reportedly Visits Constituency for First Time Since 2022 Election

Drama unfolded in Wajir County after Woman Representative Fatuma Jehow made what is reported to be her first visit to the county since the 2022 General Election.

Footage obtained by Kenyans.co.ke on Monday, July 20, showed the legislator arriving in a helicopter before proceeding with a convoy of white saloon cars to meet residents.

Moments after landing, Jehow began addressing a crowd of constituents who had gathered to receive her.

However, the meeting quickly turned chaotic as sections of the crowd heckled the lawmaker and chanted “One Term”, expressing their dissatisfaction with her leadership.

The incident comes at a time when elected leaders across the country have begun stepping up engagements with constituents ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Jehow’s performance in office has, however, drawn mixed assessments, with parliamentary records and public opinion surveys offering contrasting views of her tenure.

According to the Mzalendo Trust parliamentary scorecard, the Wajir Woman Representative scored 19 out of 100 overall, ranking 209th out of the 348 members of the National Assembly.

Her highest score was in voting participation, where she attained 70 out of 100, while her performance in speech contributions and bill sponsorship ranked lower.

Public opinion surveys have painted a different picture. Infotrak’s CountyTrak Index gave Jehow a 35 per cent approval rating, placing her among the lower-ranked Woman Representatives nationally but second in the North Eastern region behind Garissa Woman Representative Amina Udgoon Siyad.

Other pollsters have given more favourable ratings. Pollster Africa ranked Jehow as the best-performing Woman Representative in the North Eastern region, while Mizani Africa reported that her approval rating had risen to 61 per cent following relief interventions and development initiatives in the county.

The developments also come amid growing scrutiny of leaders from the North Eastern region over persistent challenges, including underdevelopment, poor education outcomes and unequal distribution of resources.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have previously criticised some leaders from the region, accusing them of neglecting local development while investing outside their counties.

Despite counties in the region receiving billions of shillings through devolution since 2013, Garissa, Wajir and Mandera continue to grapple with recurring drought, water shortages, inadequate sanitation and other development challenges.
