Southwest monsoon advances into Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh; IMD issues heavy rain alert for south, northeast

The southwest monsoon gathered pace on Saturday, advancing into parts of Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, covering the entire state of Goa and extending across most of Tamil Nadu, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast widespread rainfall activity across southern and northeastern India over the coming week.

According to the IMD, the monsoon has further progressed into additional areas of the west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and the Bay of Bengal.

It has also expanded over Mizoram and Manipur, signalling a steady northward advance in line with seasonal expectations.

The weather agency said conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to advance further into more parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the next two to three days.

During the subsequent four to five days, the monsoon is expected to cover additional areas of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, as well as more parts of the Northeast.

While monsoon activity intensifies across southern and eastern parts of the country, heatwave conditions are expected to persist in isolated pockets of northwest, central and eastern India, including Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and Odisha, over the coming week.

With the monsoon strengthening, the IMD has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and the northeastern states over the next seven days.

Heavy rain is likely over Kerala and Mahe, Coastal and Interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, while very heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations in Kerala, Coastal Karnataka and parts of southern peninsular India during the next few days.

The Northeast is also set for an extended spell of wet weather.

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are expected to receive widespread rainfall through June 12, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast in several areas.

Over the past 48 hours, heavy rainfall was recorded at isolated places in Kerala, Coastal Karnataka, Meghalaya, Odisha and Bihar, while very heavy rainfall was reported in parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The IMD warned that intense rainfall could trigger localised flooding, waterlogging in urban areas, traffic disruptions and landslides in vulnerable hilly regions. Authorities have also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into large parts of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal over the coming days due to adverse weather conditions associated with the advancing monsoon.
