The Nigerian Army has warned members of the public against fraudulent social media accounts impersonating senior military officers.

Naija News reports that the army said the fake accounts were created on online platforms, particularly Facebook, to deceive and defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on Sunday via the army’s official X handle.

According to the statement, fraudsters created fake accounts impersonating the Deputy Chief of Standards and Evaluation, Army, Maj. Gen. Raymond Utsaha.

The army said the impersonators also used the photograph of the Chief of Policy and Plans, Army, Maj. Gen. Bamidele Alabi.

“The Nigerian Army wishes to categorically state that the said Facebook accounts are fake and were created with malicious intent to defraud individuals through false representations and unauthorised online engagements,” the statement read.

The army advised the public to disregard any communication, friend requests, financial solicitations or unofficial engagements from the fake accounts.

It also said senior military officers do not conduct official transactions or sensitive matters through personal social media accounts.

The statement added that senior officers do not award contracts, request financial assistance or handle official matters through unofficial online channels.

The army urged Nigerians to be vigilant and report suspicious accounts or activities to the appropriate security agencies.

“The general public is urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious accounts or activities to the appropriate security agencies,” the statement added.

The army said it would continue to monitor and take necessary action against individuals or groups involved in cyber impersonation and related fraudulent activities.
