UK-based developer aims to create games with sustainable development without using generative AI
Industry veteran Alex Oxspring and YouTube musician The Stupendium have established the independent studio Stupendium Softworks.
The UK-based studio is developing its first game, a first-person horror survival title, with principal photography and production scheduled for this summer.
Stupendium Softworks is committed to sustainable development and does not use generative AI in its games.
“Looking around the industry, it’s incredibly frustrating to see so much waste: poor management, high staff turnover, and low investment in craft,” said Oxspring. “We want to see more emphasis put on sustainability and creativity.”
Oxspring brings over a decade of experience, having worked as a game designer at nDreams, Dambuster Studios, Sumo Digital, and Firesprite, and as managing director at Hitpoint Games.
The Stupendium is a nerdcore musician known for producing songs about video games such as Alan Wake 2, Frostpunk 2, and Genshin Impact.
Oxspring and The Stupendium first collaborated on the dating sim OnlyCans: Thirst Date in 2021, and reunited this year for Polyarmory: High Calibre Love.
The Polyarmory team is now developing Stupendium Softworks’ debut title.
“Off-colour romance laced with biting political commentary is only one flavour we offer,” said Oxspring.
“We want to make delightful, surprising games that are joyful, queer, and celebratory; that use all of our talents to give homage to our favourite game series and film influences.”
Stupendium added: “Having made songs and videos about games for so long, I really wanted the chance to create some games of my own. Plus, I had to find something else to justify these huge pieces of filmmaking equipment I keep buying.”
