The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has now spilled into Uganda, raising fresh concerns across the region as health authorities confirm that several infected individuals crossed the border while already symptomatic.
Uganda’s Ministry of Health reported that all confirmed cases in the country are linked to travelers from DRC, including a Congolese woman who moved through Arua to Kampala before testing positive, leading to one recorded death and multiple contacts now under surveillance.
In DRC, the situation remains severe, with hundreds of suspected infections and dozens of deaths concentrated in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, prompting the World Health Organization to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
The outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo strain for which no approved vaccine exists, has been difficult to contain due to late detection, cross‑border movement, and ongoing conflict in eastern Congo.
Uganda has activated emergency protocols, tightened surveillance, and postponed major public events as both countries race to prevent wider transmission.
