Super Eagles at alert as Nigerian-Jamaican defender leaves Arsenal

Nigeria’s Super Eagles selectors may have another name to keep a close eye on after highly-rated defender Josh Nichols completed a permanent move away from Arsenal, Soccernet.ng reports.

The versatile full-back, who is eligible to represent Nigeria, Jamaica, England and Guyana, has agreed to join Croatian second-division side NK Kustošija on a two-year contract. The transfer is expected to become official on July 1, 2026, immediately after the expiration of his Arsenal contract.

The move signals the end of a long association between Nichols and reigning Premier League champions Arsenal. The defender joined the North London club’s academy when he was just eight years old and gradually rose through the ranks at Hale End, one of the most respected youth development systems in English football.

Although Nichols was regarded as one of Arsenal’s promising defensive prospects, opportunities at senior level proved difficult to secure. Football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the player will continue his career in Croatia after deciding that regular first-team football was necessary for his development.

His departure comes after several seasons spent mainly with Arsenal’s Under-21 side in Premier League 2. Despite featuring regularly for the youth team and travelling with the senior squad on consecutive pre-season tours, he found it difficult to establish himself in manager Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans.

Competition for places has been fierce. Established internationals Jurrien Timber and Ben White occupied the right-back positions, while Arsenal’s deep squad made it challenging for academy graduates to break through consistently.

Nichols did, however, get a taste of senior football. His only competitive appearance for Arsenal came in September 2024 during a Carabao Cup match against Bolton Wanderers. Playing the full 90 minutes at right-back, he helped the Gunners record an emphatic 5-1 victory.

The move to Croatia now offers the defender an opportunity to play regular senior football and continue his development in a competitive European environment.

Nichols’ transfer is also significant because of his international eligibility situation. Born in the London Borough of Newham and raised in Essex, the defender is automatically eligible for England. Through his mother, he qualifies to play for Nigeria, while his father’s family background makes him eligible for both Jamaica and Guyana.

Importantly, Nichols has not represented any of the four countries at senior level, meaning his international future remains completely open.

That reality could place the Nigeria Football Federation in a race against competing nations. In recent years, several countries have intensified efforts to recruit dual-national players developed in elite European academies, and Nichols fits that profile perfectly.

From a football perspective, the 20-year-old offers qualities that could suit Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle’s tactical approach. Developed in Arsenal’s possession-based system, Nichols is comfortable operating as a traditional right-back, an inverted full-back who moves into midfield, or even on the left side of defence when required.

His technical ability stands out. Nichols is comfortable receiving the ball under pressure, capable of progressing play with intelligent passing, and possesses the positional awareness needed in modern football systems.

He is also athletic enough to recover quickly during defensive transitions and handle one-on-one situations in wide areas. Those attributes could make him an attractive option for a Super Eagles team that continues to search for greater tactical flexibility across the back line.

The switch to NK Kustošija may not attract the same headlines as a move to one of Europe’s biggest leagues, but it could prove crucial for Nichols’ career. Regular first-team football in Croatia should expose him to the demands of senior competition and help him mature physically and tactically.

The development is worth monitoring for a Super Eagles side looking to develop the next Ola Aina and Bright Osayi-Samuel. If Nichols establishes himself in Croatia and continues to progress, the battle for his international allegiance could intensify. With England, Jamaica, Guyana and Nigeria all able to call on him, the Super Eagles may need to make their interest known sooner rather than later.
