The football world is mourning the loss of former Virginia Union University standout William Davis, who reportedly passed away Saturday at the age of 22 in what is being described as an apparent suicide.
According to reports from the Houston Chronicle, Davis was found dead after recently returning home to Virginia. Sam Houston State University confirmed his passing Sunday evening. An official cause of death had not yet been publicly announced.
Davis had transferred to Sam Houston State in January after spending the 2025 season with West Virginia University and participated in spring football with the Bearkats. Before reaching the FBS level, Davis built his name as one of the premier defensive playmakers in HBCU football at Virginia Union.
A native of South Boston, Virginia, Davis played for Virginia Union from 2022 through 2024 and became a cornerstone of one of Division II football’s most dominant programs. His breakout 2024 campaign earned him All-CIAA honors after finishing the season with 56 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, and one sack.
Davis helped lead Virginia Union to back-to-back CIAA Championships, including a hard-fought 17-13 victory over rival Virginia State University in the 2024 title game. His toughness, leadership, and ability to make plays in critical moments helped establish the Panthers as one of the top HBCU programs in Division II football.
Beyond the football field, Davis also earned his bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurial management from Virginia Union in 2024, showcasing his dedication both academically and athletically.
His football journey took him from the CIAA to the Big 12 and eventually to Conference USA, but those who watched him compete at Virginia Union will remember the energy, passion, and championship mentality he brought every Saturday.
The loss of William Davis is a heartbreaking reminder that life extends far beyond the game of football. Coaches, teammates, and fans across the HBCU and college football communities continue to mourn the passing of a young man whose future appeared incredibly bright.
