Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) made a strong debut with 108 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026.

However, the TVK failed short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly. The fractured mandate has led to an uncertainty over the government formation in the state with increased speculations around the permutations and combinations among the political parties.

Speculation over possible post-poll realignments has intensified in Tamil Nadu after the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) reportedly moved its MLAs to a resort in Puducherry.

There are speculations that the AIADMK is holding discussions around a potential understanding with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) amid the ongoing government formation exercise.

On Wednesday, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to stake claim to form the government.

TVK has approached the Congress, Left parties and the VCK for support to bridge the gap.

The Congress, which secured five seats, backed TVK with conditions. Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said, “The INC is clear that the mandate in Tamil Nadu is for a secular government, committed to protecting the Constitution in letter and spirit”.

“The INC is determined not to allow the BJP and its proxies to run the government of Tamil Nadu in any manner. Thiru Vijay has also spoken about drawing inspiration from Perunthalaivar Kamaraj”, he added.

Meanwhile, the AIADMK ruled out supporting TVK.

Party Deputy Coordinator KP Munusamy said, “Whatever the situation is, AIADMK will not support TVK”, as per ANI.

The VCK, which won two seats, is yet to decide its stand. A senior functionary said, “It will be decided by our party president, Thol Thirumavalavan”, as per PTI.

Vijay’s proposed oath-taking ceremony on May 7 may face delays due to concerns over the numbers required to prove a majority.
