Tamil Nadu Government Formation Live Updates: Political uncertainty in Tamil Nadu intensified after DMK president MK Stalin reportedly informed party legislators that the AIADMK had approached the DMK for support to keep TVK chief Vijay away from power.
The development comes amid speculation over a possible understanding between the DMK and AIADMK, two long-time Dravidian rivals, following the fractured mandate in the Assembly elections.
A section within the DMK, led by Udhayanidhi Stalin, reportedly fears Vijay could replicate the dominance once enjoyed by former chief minister MG Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR.
The political activity gathered pace after Tamil Nadu Governor RV Arlekar declined Vijay’s request to form the government, citing the party’s inability to demonstrate majority support in the 234-member Assembly.
TVK, however, argued that several past instances existed where the single largest party had been invited to form the government despite lacking an immediate majority. The party maintained that it remained confident of proving its strength on the floor of the House.
The Tamil Nadu Elections 2026 produced a hung Assembly, with TVK emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats. DMK secured 59 seats, while AIADMK won 47. Congress later extended support to TVK, though the party still remains five seats short of the majority mark of 118.
Meanwhile, CPI, CPI(M) and VCK leaders reportedly met Stalin to discuss the evolving political situation, while AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) is expected to seek an appointment with the Governor on Friday, May 8.
