Pittman’s Pocket HBCU Edition: Dylan Djete Proves Alabama State Belongs on the CFL Draft Board

The Saskatchewan Roughriders made a strong statement in the 2026 CFL Draft when they selected Alabama State wide receiver Dylan Djete in Round 2 with Pick No. 18.

For HBCU football, this was more than just another draft selection—it was validation.

Djete’s rise from Alabama State to becoming one of the top HBCU prospects on the CFL board reflects the growing respect CFL organizations are giving to SWAC talent. For years, elite HBCU players have had to fight for visibility despite producing high-level talent year after year. Now, players like Djete are forcing professional scouts to look deeper.

At Alabama State, Djete developed into one of the most reliable playmakers in the conference. His combination of size, route discipline, body control, and strong hands made him a consistent mismatch against defensive backs. More importantly, he showed the ability to win contested catches and produce in key moments—traits CFL teams value heavily.

The Roughriders clearly saw a player who fits their offensive philosophy. Saskatchewan values physical receivers who can create separation while also handling the wider Canadian field and motion-heavy offensive schemes. Djete’s versatility gives him the chance to compete early for meaningful reps.

His selection also shines a spotlight on Alabama State’s football program. Producing a Round 2 CFL Draft receiver reinforces that the Hornets are developing pro-level talent and that SWAC football continues to deserve national and international scouting attention.

This is also part of a larger trend.

Across both the NFL and CFL, HBCU prospects are no longer being viewed as hidden gems—they are becoming legitimate draft investments. Scouts are learning that production, toughness, and pro readiness matter more than conference labels.

For CFL front offices, the HBCU pipeline remains one of the best places to find value. For players still grinding at the FCS and HBCU levels, Djete’s name being called is proof that the path is real.

Round 2. Pick 18. Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Dylan Djete didn’t just get drafted.

He helped push HBCU football forward.

And he may not be the last Alabama State player to hear his name called.

Other HBCU Prospects CFL Teams Should Monitor

  • BJ Washington, Jackson State
  • Thad Franklin, Florida A&M
  • Cameron Michaud, Alabama State
  • Additional SWAC and MEAC standouts rising on CFL boards

Pittman’s Pocket will continue tracking the next wave of HBCU talent making noise at the professional level.
