Businessman killed in home shootout | Local News | trinidadexpress.com

A businessman was shot dead yesterday morning at his home in Vistabella, San Fernando, in what police say was a fatal confrontation involving a woman.

Steve Ghany was involved in his family’s business in multiple construction projects.

Ghany, 37, who was married for 11 years and a father of two, was also well-known in the jet-ski fraternity.

Police said an argument broke out between Ghany and the woman around 8.30 a.m., which escalated into a physical fight.

SHOT DEAD: Steve Ghany

After a struggle for several minutes, Ghany grabbed a firearm and fired at the woman, but she was not injured, police said.

Detectives were told by a relative of Ghany that the woman grabbed another firearm and also opened fire, and Ghany was struck several times.

Crime scene investigators recovered two firearms and 11 spent shells from the scene.

The woman was detained at the house and removed from the premises by police investigators. She received medical treatment before being transferred to a Southern Division police station.

Homicide detectives of Region Three, Southern Division Task Force and San Fernando CID responded to the scene, and are working to determine the circumstances that led to the shooting.

Attorney Prakash Ramadhar, who visited the Ghany residence after the incident, spoke with relatives and police officers on the compound. Contacted by the Express, Ramadhar said by phone, “It is too early at this time to make a statement on behalf of the family.”

An employee of the Ghany family, who did not give his name, said shortly after he turned up for work, he heard banging sounds around 9.15 a.m., and later realised they were gunshots.

“I went to check the work we were supposed to do today on the house, when we heard a few noises like ‘Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!’

“My son asked me if that (noise) was galvanise pounding. About five minutes later, a policeman came into the yard and asked me what was happening. I told him I didn’t know what was going on. It was a while after I realised that something had happened,” said the employee.

The employee described Ghany as “a good person to work with”, explaining that he was approachable and easy to communicate with.

“Steve treated all of his workers very good, and he was understanding. He would call those fellas on the phone and talk to them normal. He said we were part of his family, and he trusted us, his workers,” said the employee.

Stepmother killed in 2024

Speaking to the media at the formal handing-over ceremony of the Penal Fire Station yesterday, Minister of Homeland Security Roger Alexander offered condolences to the Ghany family, and said police detectives were still carrying out investigations into the matter.

Alexander said over the weekend, he visited a rifle range where he met Ghany.

“I hope the good Lord bless his soul, and that the family will be able to live again after this incident,” Alexander said.

In December 2024, the victim’s stepmother and brother were the target of gunmen.

Monica Ghany was struck multiple times while driving a Nissan Tiida and was pronounced dead at the scene; while her son, Matthew Ghany, was shot in his right hand and survived.

The killing occurred around 2 p.m. along a road that is one of the main entry points into the city, and an area where commuters on the water taxi use to exit the ferry terminal.

Police said the mother and son had left San Fernando General Hospital minutes earlier.

It is believed they were headed back to their home on Alexander Road in San Fernando, when they were confronted by the gunmen in a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction along the wharf.

The occupants of the vehicle fired multiple rounds of gunfire at the driver’s side of the windshield, several of which struck the woman in her upper body. The shooters sped off and escaped. Her killing remains unsolved.

Her husband, also named Steve Ghany, died a few months after she was killed.
