´I´ve become a man here´ – Robertson savouring long Liverpool farewell

Soccer

Andy Robertson intends to savour every moment of his long Liverpool farewell, which began with the Scot getting a rare start in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Fulham at Anfield.

Robertson confirmed on Friday that he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, with fellow club legend Mohamed Salah having already announced his impending departure.

The left-back was selected over Milos Kerkez for the visit of Fulham, making his 374th appearance for the Reds, for whom he has played a backup role this season.

And he helped Arne Slot’s side to a 2-0 success, with Rio Ngumoha and Salah scoring in the first half as Liverpool responded after defeats to Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain in the last week.

Speaking to Sky Sports after full-time, Robertson said: “I knew my song would get sung a couple of times. This club means everything to me, that’s a fact.

“I’ve been here for nine years. I was a boy at one time. I’ve become a man here. This club’s made me into who I am now, and I owe them a lot.

“I’m just going to try and enjoy and embrace every minute I’m at this football club. When I get a start, I just try to enjoy it.”

The end of this season will be a moment of transition from Liverpool, with two stalwarts of the Jurgen Klopp era – and last season’s title win under Slot – moving on.

But in Ngumoha, they have the third-youngest player to start and score in a Premier League game, doing so at the age of 17 years and 225 days. Only Wayne Rooney and Cesc Fabregas have achieved that feat at a younger age.

Ngumoha’s goal – an excellent curling effort that came after he turned Timothy Castagne inside-out – also made him Liverpool’s youngest Premier League scorer at Anfield, surpassing Raheem Sterling (17 years, 317 days versus Reading in October 2012).

And Robertson believes the future is bright if players like Ngumoha continue to develop, saying of the teenager: “He’s unbelievable.

“It just shows you sometimes shouldn’t listen to the experienced players! I was screaming to say I was coming on the overlap!

“Then he just goes and cuts inside, it’s a great finish, a great performance by him. He just keeps learning and listening, he’s such a good kid.

“Him and Trey [Nyoni] are a pleasure to work with and they listen to all the lads.

“You can just see them improving all the time. He’s got a big future ahead of him, but the here and now is pretty good as well.”

Ngumoha added: “It was a special goal. Robbo created space for me, so I just cut inside and aimed for the corner.

“Liverpool, for me, are the biggest club in the world, and to start so young with the manager and all the players having belief in me… I’ve just got to keep working hard.”
