7-round mock draft feels perfect for the Cowboys

Football

Draft analyst Ian Cummings recently released a complete seven-round mock draft, selecting for all 32 teams using Pro Football Network’s draft simulator. He didn’t project any trades, instead standing pat with each team’s current draft picks. His selections for the Dallas Cowboys could be ideal for the way things hopefully turn out in April. But, will let you decide whether or not you agree.

Day 1 (Round 1)

12) Dallas Cowboys

Caleb Downs, Ohio State | DB

With a second first-round pick waiting in the wings, the Cowboys opt to take the best player available in this 2026 NFL Mock Draft. In defensive coordinator Christian Parker’s scheme, Caleb Downs can be a do-it-all player, with the versatility to play split-field or roam as a nickel in zone.

While Downs never did testing this cycle, it doesn’t take much exposure to the tape to know he’s the real deal. Downs’ coverage, mobility, and elite football IQ are the glues that fuse his game together. He dissuades targets in coverage and is rock-solid in support.

20) Dallas Cowboys

Jacob Rodriguez, Texas Tech | LB

This may come as a surprise, but perhaps it shouldn’t. Yes, Jacob Rodriguez is undersized at 6-foot-1, 230 pounds, with sub-31-inch arms. But he won four defensive awards with elite production in 2025. He tested as one of the best athletes in the class, and he was one of the defensive stars of the Senior Bowl.

Aside from size and play strength, there aren’t too many holes to poke in Rodriguez’s game, and the Cowboys desperately need competent LB play. Rodriguez has the acumen to man the “green dot” role, but also has the range and fluidity to make plays in all phases.

Caleb Downs being available at No. 12 would be a dream come true for the Cowboys. He’s a perfect fit as a nickel safety in Christian Parker’s defensive scheme and he would immediately upgrade the entire unit as a plug-and-play starter.

Jacob Rodriguez’selection No. 20 is probably a little bit of a reach, but considering the Cowboys “need” at MLB it could be a necessary one. His mental processing as both a run and pass defender as well as his ability to create turnovers could make him a true difference maker as Dallas’ new starting MLB.

Day 2 (Rounds 2-3)

92) Dallas Cowboys

Will Lee III, Texas A&M | CB

At 6-foot-1 1/2, 189 pounds, with near-33-inch arms and high-level explosiveness, Will Lee III gives Dallas a scheme-versatile CB with playmaking chops and a chippy competitive edge.

With the Cowboys only selection on Day 2, CB Will Lee III was added to create depth at the position, as well as giving Dallas a potential starter. The interesting thing about this selection though is former Longhorns CB Malik Muhammad was still available as well. Both are good players with starting potential, but Muhammad is typically the higher ranked prospect. It would be really interesting to see who the Cowboys would choose between the two.

Day 3 (Rounds 4-6)

112) Dallas Cowboys

Jaishawn Barham, Michigan | EDGE

152) Dallas Cowboys

Kaelon Black, Indiana | RB

177) Dallas Cowboys

Chandler Rivers, Duke | CB

180) Dallas Cowboys

Lewis Bond, Boston College | WR

218) Dallas Cowboys

Rene Konga, Louisville | DT

The selections for the Cowboys on Day 3 are an intriguing mix. Jaishawn Barham would primarily be an OLB in Dallas, but has the versatility to play off-ball LB as well. Kaelon Black is a complete back who could be a serious contender for the RB2 job. Chandler Rivers would be a steal at No. 177, giving Dallas another Jourdan Lewis type of nickel CB. Lewis Bond would provide much-needed WR depth. And, Rene Konga has a chance to earn a roster spot as a 4i in Christian Parker’s scheme.
