A man driving an excavator is in police custody after a 70-year-old pedestrian died in a road traffic collision in north London yesterday (19 March).

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said the force and ambulance service were called to reports of a collision between a heavy plant vehicle and a pedestrian, just before 11.30am on Kilburn High Road.

“Sadly, the pedestrian, a 70-year-old man, died at the scene,” the spokesperson said.

The London Ambulance Service sent two ambulance crews, three paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene, as well as a paramedic and a doctor in a car sent by the air ambulance service.

“The first paramedic arrived at the scene in around five minutes. Despite the efforts of our team, a person sadly died at the scene,” a spokesperson said.

One witness told the Metro: “It was horrible, there was screaming and a woman shouting ‘move’ to the driver.

“The poor man was underneath. People were crying. I’ve never seen anything like that, I can’t get it out of my head.”

Photos from the scene show the digger was branded by plant-hire firm Flannery.

The company has been contacted for comment.

Construction News contacted the London Ambulance Service for further information.

Police have launched a public appeal for information and dashcam footage of the collision.

Anyone with information is asked to call 020 8597 4874, quoting CAD 2908/19MAR26.
