´Bayern are not afraid of anyone´ – Kane relishing Real Madrid clash

Soccer

Harry Kane insisted Bayern Munich “are not afraid of anyone” as they set up a Champions League quarter-final clash with Real Madrid.

Bayern defeated Atalanta 4-1 in the second leg of their last 16 tie, securing a 10-2 win on aggregate – the heaviest ever defeat suffered by an Italian team over two legs in European competition.

Bayern have now scored 10+ goals in a two-legged knockout stage tie in the Champions League on three occasions (previously 12 versus Sporting CP in 2008-09 and 10 against Arsenal in 2016-17). No other team has done so more than once in the competition.

Kane scored twice to reach 50 goals in the Champions League. Only Erling Haaland (49) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (62) have ever reached the milestone in fewer games than Kane (66 – level with Lionel Messi).

Kane has also scored 29 goals in 34 Champions League games for Bayern; more than any other player in the competition since the start of 2023-24.

With Madrid up next for the Bavarian club, Kane is relishing a challenge against the record Champions League winners.

“Real Madrid is always a dangerous opponent, but we are not afraid of anyone,” said Kane.

“These will be exciting games for everybody – I’m looking forward to them.”

And on the second-leg win over Atalanta, Kane added: “The fact that we won the game was the most satisfying thing today.

“The motivation is sometimes hard to get up for matches like this, but we had a good mix.

“With such a lead from the first leg, it’s easy to be complacent. But we said that we wanted to win with the same style as the first leg.

“Credit to the boys, we were there from the first to the last minute. Some of the youngsters got their debuts. Overall we can be happy.”

Vincent Kompany handed Champions League debuts to 16-year-old Filip Pavic and 18-year-old Deniz Ofli, while Lennart Karl scored and assisted in the win.

Karl (18y 24d) is the youngest German player to score and assist in a Champions League match, as well as the youngest to do so for Bayern.

“It’s not easy for young players to get minutes at FC Bayern,” said Kompany.

“I hope they enjoy these moments. These guys have been training with us for a while, and at some point their moment comes.”
