The wife of a Hindu man who was attacked with sharp weapons and set on fire in Bangladesh said she is unable to understand why her husband was targeted so brutally, insisting that the family had no disputes with anyone in their village. Seema Das told NDTV that her husband, Khokon Chandra Das, was attacked without provocation while returning home after closing his shop.

“We have no dispute with anyone on any issue. We don’t understand why my husband was suddenly targeted,” she said.

“We are Hindu. We just want to live peacefully. The attackers were Muslims and the police are trying to arrest them. I request the government for help,” she added.

Khokon Das ran a medicine and mobile banking business in his village, located about 150 km from the capital Dhaka. The attack took place on Wednesday night as he was returning home after shutting his shop. According to his wife, Khokon Das recognised two of the attackers, after which they poured petrol on his head and face and set him on fire. In a desperate attempt to save himself, he jumped into a nearby pond, which helped extinguish the flames. The attackers fled soon after. Local residents rushed him to a nearby hospital but doctors later referred him to Dhaka Medical College due to the severity of his injuries.

Seema Das said the couple has three children, and that doctors told the family Khokon Das had lost a large amount of blood and needed at least six units to stabilise his condition.

Bangladesh has witnessed escalating violence against minorities, including Hindus, under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus- a charge denied by the administration.

Last week, India expressed grave concern over what it described as “unremitting hostility” against minorities in Bangladesh and said it was closely monitoring developments in its neighbourhood. The Bangladesh government, in response, said it remained committed to protecting minority communities.
