Americans Abroad Midweek Rewind: Robinson, Aaronson, and more

Soccer

Fulham has moved its way up the English Premier League table to start the new year with Antonee Robinson continuing his impactful run in the Cottagers’ squad.

Robinson played 73 minutes on Wednesday in Fulham’s 2-1 London Derby victory over Chelsea at Craven Cottage. It marked the U.S. men’s national team left back’s seventh-consecutive start in all competitions.

Goals from Raul Jimenez and Harry Wilson extended Fulham’s unbeaten run to five matches in league play, bumping them up to ninth place in the league table.

Robinson won three duels, made four clearances, and five defensive recoveries, silencing Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer for most of the night. The veteran defender is looking back to his best after missing most of the season through injury.

Fulham will next aim to extend its unbeaten run on Saturday against Middlesbrough in FA Cup play.

In England, Brenden Aaronson scored twice in Leeds United’s road loss to Newcastle United. Chris Richards returned to the Crystal Palace bench but did not feature in a goal-less draw with Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, Christian Pulisic went the distance in AC Milan’s draw with Genoa. Johnny Cardoso and Atletico Madrid suffered elimination in the Spanish Super Cup while Tim Weah and Marseille lost the French Super Cup.
