AFCON 2025 has produced a lot of emotional moments that have reminded the football world why they need to stay glued to their TV screens….

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations has reinforced why the tournament remains one of football’s most captivating events, Soccernet.ng reports.

Although officially branded AFCON 2025, the competition has been extended into 2026 due to scheduling adjustments, which is also one of the rarest timelines in the tournament’s history.

Rather than dulling the excitement, the extended calendar has heightened global interest, with the competition seamlessly picking up the storylines left behind at the 2023 edition.

Soccer Kylian Mbappe: Past and present France internationals grace AFCON 2025

The tournament has also drawn attention from around the world of football. France captain Kylian Mbappé was spotted in the stands to watch his former Paris Saint-Germain teammate Achraf Hakimi turn out for hosts Morocco.

Jules Koundé and Aurélien Tchouaméni have also been present at matches, which also shows AFCON’s growing global appeal.

One of the most touching scenes came as French football legend Zinedine Zidane watched proudly from the stands as his son Luca Zidane represented Algeria.

On the pitch, drama has never been in short supply. Uganda were forced into an extraordinary situation during their group-stage clash against Nigeria, using three goalkeepers in one match.

First-choice keeper Denis Onyango was forced off through injury; his replacement, Jamal Salim Magoola, was then sent off for handling outside the box just minutes later, leaving third-choice goalkeeper Alionzi Nafian Legason to finish the game.

Elsewhere, Mali produced one of the tournament’s quirkiest achievements by reaching the Round of 16 without recording a single win—yet doing enough to progress.

Soccer Super fan pays homage to Patrice Lumumba

In the stands, DR Congo supporter Kuka Muladinga has gone viral for his striking, statuesque pose during matches, paying a powerful homage to Patrice Lumumba, the nation’s first prime minister in the early 1960s.

Perhaps the most inspiring story belongs to Burkina Faso winger Georgi Minoungou. After suffering a serious eye infection in 2023 that left him effectively blind in his left eye, Minoungou has defied the odds.

Two years on, he is featuring at his first AFCON and scoring on his tournament debut.

It is safe to say that AFCON 2025 has once again reminded the world why African football continues to captivate hearts far beyond the continent.
