The ‘Long Butterfly Cut’ with Bangs Will Refresh Your Hair Without Going Short

When you analyze trends 24 hours a day—yes, sometimes it happens even in your dreams—you quickly understand why the long butterfly cut with parted bangs is the hottest hair trend of the moment.

We’re in a phase of renewed devotion to long hair. Rosalía, Jenna Ortega, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift…they all wear their hair past their shoulders—with some letting their hair hit their waists. For many, the Lucy Boynton bob we all swooned over in 2019 is being replaced by XXL length with a distinctly vintage feel. Blame #medievalTikTok or the religious iconography from Rosalía’s Lux album, but the fact is that it’s time to grow your hair very long.

This, however, doesn’t mean you have to have boring hair. Layers, textured cuts, bangs, and a variety of other styles look fantastic when there’s enough length to work with. So much so that the butterfly cut has become one of the current obsessions for adding movement and style to long hair.

As the Figaro Street Fashion Show designers confirm: “For long hair, bangs with subtle highlights are back, while the butterfly cut is making a comeback with a very defined front and balayage in the sophisticated old-money blonde shade.” As you can see, there are many ways to liven up this type of hair. And the long butterfly cut will be the most popular style during the first months of 2026.

What the long butterfly haircut looks like

Yes, you already knew the butterfly cut: “It’s a layered cut with more pronounced convex layers around the face to create a subtle Farrah Fawcett effect. It’s perfect for women with voluminous hair who take the time to care for it so the result looks beautiful and very modern,” explained the designers at the Figaro Street 2025/26 Fashion Show.

They also told Glamour Spain that it would be reborn with an updated look in 2026: “It will have a more natural feel, with long layers that frame the face, controlled volume on top, and ends that fan out like wings. Its fall is fluid and light, designed to enhance shine and texture without the need for touch-ups.”

And now comes the “long butterfly,” an even longer version of this ’70s classic. Fermín Díaz, hairdresser and owner of Fermín Díaz Hair Salon, explains: “For those who are still hesitant about short hair but want a different and somewhat edgy look, this cut is here to stay. It’s characterized by adding movement and lightness to voluminous hair. It has long and short layers that give the hair a lot of movement and volume, creating a light and elegant effect, like the wings of a butterfly.”

Key aspects of the long butterfly cut:

  • Length: At least below the shoulders, and ideally a hand’s width below
  • Style: It’s worn with a long, parted fringe that blends seamlessly with the layers that define this cut. These layers create several steps around the face, which is perfectly framed by them.
  • What hair type does it suit best? “It works wonderfully on medium to thick hair, straight or slightly wavy. On fine hair, it can be adapted by reducing the number of layers to avoid losing body,” say the experts at the Figaro Street hair-trends runway.
  • What are the advantages? It adds a lot of movement to the hair, while creating manageable volume. It also rejuvenates the look and adds dynamism to very long hair.

Rest assured, the long butterfly cut is exactly what you need if you love wearing your hair long but were starting to feel the need for a hair refresh.
