Tragic Crash Claims Lives of Three High School Football Players in North Carolina

A North Carolina community is mourning the loss of three E.E. Smith High School students who were killed in a devastating car crash Wednesday night in Fayetteville. A fourth student remains in critical condition.

According to the Fayetteville Police Department, the crash occurred around 7:22 p.m. on Rosehill Road. Investigators say the 2024 Honda Civic the students were riding in struck a telephone pole, continued down a sidewalk, and collided with a tree.

Three of the teens — Trevor Merritt (#11)Nick Williams (#4), and Jai’Hyon Elliot (#21) — died at the scene. Their families have confirmed their identities and shared photos of their loved ones.

A fourth passenger, Dymond Monroe, was airlifted to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill with serious injuries and remains in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon.

All three students who lost their lives were members of the E.E. Smith Golden Bulls football team, leaving the school and wider Fayetteville community heartbroken.

E.E. Smith was scheduled to play South View High School on Friday night during South View’s homecoming, but the game has been postponed out of respect for the victims’ families and fellow students.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with their families, loved ones, and the entire E.E. Smith Golden Bulls family as they grieve this heartbreaking loss,” said Lindsay Whitley, associate superintendent for Cumberland County Schools. “We appreciate the kindness, understanding, and support of both school communities during this difficult time.”

A rescheduled date for the game will be announced once determined.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
