Troops Free 9 Hostages in Sokoto, Eliminate Terrorists in Zamfara Ambush”

Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA (OPFY) have rescued nine kidnapped victims and neutralised several terrorists during a successful ambush along the Isa–Shinkafi–Kaura Namoda axis linking Sokoto and Zamfara States.

The operation, which took place on 31 August 2025, followed credible intelligence that terrorists were moving captives through a notorious crossing point in Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State. Acting swiftly, the troops laid an ambush in the area. On sighting the soldiers, the terrorists attempted to use their abductees as human shields to prevent engagement.

The troops responded decisively and methodically, overpowering the criminals in a fierce gun battle. A number of terrorists were neutralised, while others fled with gunshot wounds, abandoning their captives.

According to Captain David Adewusi, Media Information Officer of OPFY, the victims—three adult females and six children—were abducted earlier from Garin Bature village in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State. They were immediately evacuated to the General Hospital in Shinkafi for medical care before being handed over to officials of the local government.

Items recovered from the scene included one AK-47 rifle with two magazines containing 20 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, a motorcycle belonging to the terrorists, three mobile phones, and a pair of desert camouflage uniforms.

Captain Adewusi added that the victims are now in the custody of Shinkafi Local Government officials, who have assured that they will be reunited with their families soon.

He further reaffirmed OPFY’s resolve to sustain aggressive operations until terrorism and banditry are completely eradicated from the North West and parts of the North Central region. The force also urged residents to continue providing credible intelligence to support ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
