Robertson Construction North East has moved plans forward for a £30m cancer treatment and research centre at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, after being appointed main contractor in January.
The contractor is working with Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the client for the scheme, to deliver the Sir Bobby Robson Institute. A planning application has now been submitted.
The three-storey building will consolidate the existing Sir Bobby Robson Cancer Trials Research Centre with the hospital’s wider cancer and blood disorder research teams.
It will provide around 3,500 square metres of specialist clinical and research space, enabling a 50 per cent increase in clinical trial activity over five years.
Funding is being led by Newcastle Hospitals Charity through the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
Some £20m has already been raised, with a campaign underway to secure the final £10m.
Robertson was appointed through the ProCure23 framework and has been involved since RIBA Stage 1, providing pre-construction and design services in collaboration with P+HS Architects.
The building’s design is inspired by the molecular structure of Rubraca, a cancer drug developed in Newcastle.
If approved, construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2026, with completion targeted for 2028.
