BitcoinOS Launches “Charms”: Programmable Tokens for Bitcoin

Bitcoins

BitcoinOS, a project focused on expanding Bitcoin’s potential, has launched Charms, a new feature that unlocks new potential for Bitcoin.

BitcoinOS is a platform built to make Bitcoin smarter. It supports tools like smart contracts and tokens without compromising Bitcoin’s security or simplicity.

Meanwhile, Charms is a programmable and portable token designed to bring smart features to Bitcoin without changing its core. It is a token standard designed specifically for Bitcoin. Think of Charms as “enchanted” Bitcoin units.

Notably, they allow users to create and move tokens, NFTs, and even smart assets across different blockchains. All of these happen without using bridges or relying on third-party systems.

With Charms, each Bitcoin transaction (or UTXO) becomes a canvas. Users can program it, move it, and prove what it does (securely and privately) using zero-knowledge proofs, a privacy-focused technology.

No More Bridges, Just “Beaming”

Usually, moving crypto from one blockchain to another requires bridges, which can be risky and complicated. Charms change that. Instead of bridging, they use a new method called “beaming.”

In a recent demo, a Charms token was directly sent from Bitcoin to Cardano without using bridges. It only used a Bitcoin node, a Cardano node, and a lightweight Charms client. Beams could be a big leap in cross-chain technology.

Meet xBTC: Enchanted Bitcoin

With Charms, Bitcoin itself becomes programmable, opening doors to entirely new use cases. One major development is xBTC, a token that wraps Bitcoin into a programmable format. This is similar to how Ethereum users wrap ETH into wETH.

This change means Bitcoin can now be used in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. As a result, holders can lend or earn yield with their Bitcoin in cross-chain lending pools. It also paves the way for bitcoin-backed stablecoins, which can provide more stability in volatile markets without needing to leave the Bitcoin ecosystem.

Perhaps most exciting is the ability to buy, sell, and trade directly using programmable Bitcoin, all while maintaining full ownership. No middlemen, no wrapped tokens on external chains, and no loss of control. The idea is pure native Bitcoin upgraded with new possibilities.

There is no doubt that BitcoinOS and Charms could change how people use Bitcoin.
