The Bank of England has released four pipeline notices for work at its historic Threadneedle Street site in the City of London.

A main works contract for up to £120m plus VAT is expected to start in October 2026 and run for just over three years, concluding in December 2029.

According to the pipeline notice, a tender is expected to be released in December this year.

A spokesperson for the bank said it could not confirm the exact scope of work.

The other pipeline notices released yesterday (22 May) cover:

  • Early stage enabling refurbishment and overhaul work to support the planned reconfiguration of the central London building, in an £8m contract to run from April to September 2026.
  • Mechanical, electrical and plumbing works through a £5m framework running for five years to 31 December 2030, with a formal tender expected to be announced on 1 September.
  • Building fabric works “across multiple sites” in another five-year, £5m framework until 31 December 2030

The Grade I-listed Threadneedle Street building is one of the City of London’s most significant architectural landmarks. It has been the home of the Bank of England since 1732.

None of the pipeline notices are connected to the planned repair and weatherproofing work on the building’s portico roof, the spokesperson said.

“As part of our plans to preserve our historic Threadneedle Street office, we are considering how best to renovate the site and optimise running costs. The estimated costs are indicative and all our procurement processes aim to deliver value for money,” the spokesperson added.
