WEF Report: How Tokenization Is Transforming Financial Markets - Part 1

The World Economic Forum believes tokenization is a more intelligent means of investing. The use of blockchain is changing the process of buying and managing assets like stocks, real estate, and bonds.

In its latest report, the WEF breaks down how tokenization is streamlining financial markets and making them more accessible.

What Is Tokenization (And Why Should You Care)?

Tokenization means exchanging real assets for digital tokens on a programmable ledger. Tokens prove who owns something. They hold real value, and you can make transfers without involving intermediaries. With tokenization, you can make international investments or participate in a private equity fund by putting in little cash. It is becoming something people can rely on.

Tokenization isn’t a theory anymore, it’s happening.

RWAs are live, capital is flowing, and infrastructure is maturing. But for all this momentum, participation remains fragmented, and adoption uneven.

How Did We Get Here?

The WEF highlights three phases in the evolution of financial assets:

  • Pre-1980s: They wrote everything on paper. Moving settlements took ample time, and taking notes was chaotic.
  • While electronic tools improved in the 1980s–2010s, the financial sector depended greatly on intermediaries.
  • In the years following 2010, tokenization appeared, making an immediate, open, and cheaper transaction process possible.

The World Economic Forum (@wef) released a new report on tokenization in financial markets.

The report concludes that tokenization can enhance the efficiency and transparency of financial markets, while giving investors increased access and control over their assets.

Why Tokenization Matters

Tokenization is bringing real benefits across financial markets.

1. Faster, Smarter TradingSmart contracts send tokens immediately, automatically process transactions, enforce rules, and handle dividend payments.

2. Fractional Ownership: Don’t have enough money for a whole property or painting? Tokenization means you can buy some of your valuable assets, so more people can get involved in investing.

3. Better Collateral ManagementGold and bonds are now better securities in repurchase agreements or real-time lending, making the process faster and cheaper.

4. More Transparency: With everything recorded on a shared digital ledger, there’s less risk of fraud, fewer errors, and clearer ownership trails.

TL;DR: Tokenization isn’t a crypto experiment. It’s how global finance is about to run.

$13B in onchain credit.
$100B+ in idle collateral about to be unlocked.
T+0 is the new normal.

Real-World Examples
  • Bonds: Governments and corporations are issuing tokenized bonds to cut costs and improve access.
  • Private Equity: ADDX and Aurum are lowering investment thresholds for private equity, making it more accessible.
  • Money Market Funds: Franklin Templeton and Fidelity are launching tokenized funds for faster, cheaper investing.
  • Real Estate and Commodities: Tokenization helps digitize land records, offers fractional ownership, and even tokenizes gold and carbon credits.

TradFi is not here to fight DeFi. It’s here to use it.

The same institutions DeFi was meant to disrupt?

They’re now using blockchain to move faster, cut costs, and access new markets.

Franklin Templeton is a prime example.⁰

Tokenization is promising, but not without hurdles. Legal recognition of digital ownership, cross-border regulations, and system interoperability needs more work. Plus, not every asset is easy to tokenize—real estate and commodities, for example, still face tech and legal barriers.

Conclusion

The WEF’s report clarifies that tokenization isn’t only a trend. It’s making investing faster, more innovative, and more inclusive. From programmable bonds to fractional real estate, tokenized finance is opening up opportunities that were once out of reach for most people. Here is the second part.
