Ahmed Musa will lead Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the upcoming Unity Cup in London, on his return to the national team fold after being overlooked for recent World Cup qualifiers, Soccernet.ng reports.

Kano Pillars confirmed on Monday that their superstar, who has been in fine form this season, will headline Nigeria’s squad for the four-nation invitational tournament.

The competition is set to run from 26–31 May 2025 at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium.

“Captain Ahmed Musa is set to lead the Super Eagles at the Unity Cup 4-Nations Tourney from May 26–31, 2025, at Brentford Stadium, London,” the Nigerian Premier League side said in a statement.

Musa’s recall comes after national team coach Eric Chelle left him out of Nigeria’s March World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. However, the former Leicester City winger now appears back in the manager’s plans ahead of the summer tournament.

The Unity Cup, last held in 2004, returns this year after a 21-year hiatus. Originally hosted at The Valley, the competition featured Nigeria, Jamaica and the Republic of Ireland, with the Super Eagles lifting the trophy. The 2025 edition expands to four teams: Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.

The semi-finals will kick off with Trinidad and Tobago facing Jamaica on Tuesday 27 May.

On Wednesday 28 May, Nigeria will go head-to-head with West African rivals Ghana in a highly anticipated clash. The tournament concludes on Saturday 31 May with a third-place play-off followed by the final.

Dwight Yorke, the former Manchester United striker, will be on the sidelines as Trinidad and Tobago’s head coach, adding a touch of star power to the event.

Musa’s inclusion is a major boost for Nigeria. The 32-year-old forward remains one of the most experienced players in the squad. Since making his international debut in 2010 as a teenager, he has earned 110 caps – more than any other Nigerian player – and scored 18 goals.

He holds the distinction of being the first Nigerian to score more than once in a single World Cup match (vs Argentina in 2014) and the first to score in two World Cup tournaments, following his brace against Iceland in 2018.

A key figure in Nigeria’s modern football history, Musa helped the Super Eagles win the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, secured third place in 2019, and claimed silver at the most recent tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.

While Musa has not been a part of the Super Eagles since that final in February, his domestic form has been impressive. The veteran winger has registered eight goals and two assists for Kano Pillars in the ongoing 2024–25 NPFL season.
