Global Mentoring Walk Set to Inspire Youth in FCT

  1. Global Mentoring Walk Set to Inspire Youth in FCT

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, is set to host the prestigious Global Mentoring Walk, an initiative designed to empower young individuals through mentorship. The event, scheduled for March 8, 2025, at Eagle Square, coincides with International Women’s Day and aims to foster connections between experienced professionals and aspiring young leaders.

The Global Mentoring Walk is being organized by the Sheroes Rising 4 Development Initiative in collaboration with Voices in Motion Nigeria, Trust TV, PRNigeria and The Progressive Institute.

According to the Chief Executive of Sheroes, Hawwa Jiddare, the mentorship walk traces its roots to an initiative by Geraldine Laybourne, the founder and former CEO of Oxygen Media. Laybourne started the walk as a way to share insights and guidance with young women despite her tight schedule, turning her morning exercise into an opportunity for impactful mentorship. The model gained traction, leading to organized walks across major U.S. cities and eventually evolving into a global movement.

In 2008, the Vital Voices Global Partnership formally adopted the initiative, transforming it into an international phenomenon. Since then, thousands of women across more than 60 countries have participated annually, emphasizing the significance of mentorship in professional and personal development. The event provides a structured yet informal platform for knowledge-sharing and guidance, helping young individuals gain insights into their respective fields from accomplished mentors.

Although traditionally designed for women and girls, the Abuja edition of the Global Mentoring Walk will be an all-inclusive event, welcoming both young men and women. Jiddare highlighted the importance of expanding mentorship opportunities beyond gender boundaries, stressing that the youth, who make up over 70% of Nigeria’s population, require structured guidance to navigate their careers and aspirations effectively.

“Mentorship is a critical factor not only for individual growth but also for socio-economic development,” Jiddare noted. “Now more than ever, our society needs mentors who can guide and support the youth. The Global Mentoring Walk offers an excellent opportunity to bridge the gap and create lasting mentor-mentee relationships.”

Organizers are calling on patriotic and forward-thinking Nigerians to participate in the 90-minute walk, which promises to be a transformative experience. The event will serve as a platform to inspire the next generation, reignite passion, and instill patriotism among the youth.

As March marks Women’s Month, the Global Mentoring Walk provides an opportunity to celebrate the role of women in societal development while fostering a culture of mentorship. The event is expected to bring together professionals, industry leaders, and young talents in a shared space of learning and empowerment.
