The 8th Edition of the Nigeria International Energy Summit (NIES 2025) commenced in grand style, reaffirming the country’s commitment to driving sustainable energy solutions, fostering investments, and positioning itself as a global energy leader.

Delivering the welcome address, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Ambassador Nicholas Agbo Ella underscored the summit’s significance as Nigeria’s premier energy platform, endorsed at the highest levels of government.

“Since its inception in 2018, NIES has grown into a globally recognized event that bridges continents and sectors, serving as a catalyst for policy evolution, market-driven strategies, and sustainable development,” he stated.

This year’s theme, “Bridging Continents: Connecting Investors Worldwide with Africa’s Energy Potential,” highlights the urgency for strategic collaborations and investment in Africa’s energy sector. As the largest oil producer and a leading gas powerhouse in Africa, Nigeria remains pivotal in shaping the continent’s energy future.

A key highlight of the summit is Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to establish the African Energy Bank (AEB), an initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Petroleum Resources in collaboration with the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO).

The AEB aims to bridge Africa’s energy infrastructure gaps, catalyze investments, and drive sustainable energy solutions tailored to the continent’s unique needs.

Ambassador Ella also emphasized Nigeria’s strides in energy transition and innovation, citing the country’s first-ever International Hydrogen Conference, held in November 2024.

This milestone event, organized in partnership with the Foundation for Sustainable Social Responsibility in Emerging Africa (FOSSREA), showcased Nigeria’s ambition to lead in hydrogen energy development.

Furthermore, Nigeria continues to leverage its natural gas resources as a transitional fuel, aligning with global decarbonization goals. Initiatives like the National Gas Expansion Program (NGEP), the Nigeria Gas Transportation Network Code, and the Decade of Gas underscore the country’s commitment to boosting domestic gas utilization, reducing flaring, and fostering industrialization.

Reflecting on the previous edition, Ambassador Ella highlighted the growing impact of NIES:

Over 5,000 participants from 45 countries representing government, industry leaders, and investors.

4,182 square meters of exhibition space showcasing cutting-edge technologies and investment opportunities.

More than 60 plenary sessions, workshops, and panel discussions on energy transition, decarbonization, refining, and digital transformation.

Over $2.5 billion in investment deals and MOUs signed during the summit.

Acknowledging the vital role of industry stakeholders, Ambassador Ella extended his appreciation to regulatory bodies such as NUPRC, NMDPRA, NCDMB, PTDF, PTI, NNRA, as well as sponsors and event organizers Brevity Anderson for ensuring the summit’s success.

As the summit unfolds, he urged participants to engage in meaningful collaborations, shape policies that align with Africa’s energy ambitions, and explore innovations driving the future of energy.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria remains unwavering in its commitment to fostering an enabling environment for investment, innovation, and sustainable development in the energy sector. Within today’s challenges lie opportunities for collaboration, growth, and transformation,” he concluded.

NIES 2025 is expected to be a transformative event, reinforcing Nigeria’s leadership in the global energy landscape while driving sustainable and inclusive growth across Africa.
