Soccer Nigeria star with goals against Barcelona, Sevilla, Valencia nominated for award in Spain

Nigeria’s Super Falcons forward, Gift Monday, has been nominated for the Spanish Liga F Player of the Month award for February following her outstanding performances for UD Tenerife, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 23-year-old Gift Monday has been instrumental in Tenerife’s rise to sixth place in the league, scoring 10 goals in 17 appearances this season.

Her latest contributions came in February, when she found the net in crucial league victories against Sevilla and Valencia.

Monday’s nomination places her among an elite group of players vying for the monthly accolade.

Also in contention are Real Madrid’s Alba Redondo, Barcelona’s Caroline Hansen, Deportivo La Coruña’s Ainhoa Marin, Athletic Club’s Ane Azkona, Granada’s Ari Mingueza, and Eibar’s Elba Verges.

Now in her third season with Tenerife, Monday has firmly established herself as one of Liga F’s most dangerous forwards.

Before her non-scoring outing against Eibar last week, she had been on a remarkable scoring streak, netting in six consecutive matches between December and January.

That run included goals against powerhouses such as Barcelona, Deportivo, Granada, and Madrid.

Her consistent goal-scoring exploits have placed her third in the Liga F top scorers’ chart, trailing Barcelona’s Ewa Pajor (15 goals) and Granada’s Edna Imade (12 goals).

Monday’s goal tally this season is already better than her previous two years in Spain combined.

Last season, the Super Falcons forward only managed six goals in 28 league appearances while she registered three goals in 19 games in her maiden campaign.

Monday was also effective in the Copa de la Reina, netting two goals in two matches before Tenerife were knocked out of the competition by Barcelona.

Interestingly on the international scene, Monday is still searching for her first competitive goal for Nigeria senior women team, the Super Falcons.

She was, however, on target as the Super Falcons secured a dominant 4-1 win over Algeria in the second-leg of their international friendlies at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, last October.
