Benfica land in Belgium to test Genk’s resolve with N14 billion bid for Nigeria’s Tolu Arokodare

Portuguese giants Benfica have made contact with KRC Genk over a potential move for Tolu Arokodare as the January transfer window nears its deadline, Soccernet.ng reports

The 24-year-old Nigerian striker has been in fine form for the Belgian side this season, attracting interest from across Europe.

Reports from Portugal via Voetbalkrant indicate that Benfica are preparing a bid of €9m (approx. N14.14 billion) for Tolu Arokodare, but Genk are expected to hold out for at least double that amount.

The club’s sporting director, Dimitri De Condé, is keen to avoid a repeat of past mistakes — particularly the sale of Paul Onuachu in January 2023, which derailed their title challenge that season.

Genk currently sit at the top of the Jupiler Pro League, with Tolu Arokodare playing a crucial role in their push for the championship. The Nigerian has netted 14 goals in 23 league appearances this season, making him one of the standout performers in Belgian football.

Losing him at this stage of the campaign would be a significant blow to their title ambitions.

Head coach Thorsten Fink is reportedly adamant about keeping Arokodare until the summer, fearing that his departure could disrupt the squad’s momentum.

However, Benfica’s interest remains strong, and with the Portuguese side looking to reinforce their attack, a late bid could put Genk’s resolve to the test.

Genk are not outright opposed to Arokodare’s departure but would prefer to negotiate a deal that allows him to stay until the end of the season. The Belgian club’s stance has not deterred Benfica, who are hopeful of securing a deal before the window shuts.

Tolu Arokodare, meanwhile, is said to be keeping his options open. While he is not actively pushing for a January move, he is also not opposed to staying until the summer. His performances this season have also sparked discussions of a potential maiden call-up to the Nigerian senior national team in March.
