Letters: Donald Trump’s ignorance about Canada continues to shock

Seriously, I just can’t believe what comes out of the mouth of the illiterate president-to-be down south. Wayne Gretzky should be prime minister of Canada … good grief! He has also said he wants to make Canada the 51st state. Canada is part of the Commonwealth. Google it.

The Commonwealth is a voluntary association that includes 56 independent, democratic countries. The Commonwealth is home to more than 2.5 billion people, which is almost one third of the world’s population. The United States is not a part of this.

Our main allegiance is to the King of England and certainly not to an illiterate president-elect taking office soon. He should consult with his sidekick Elon Musk, who is a Canadian citizen as well as a South African citizen (both Commonwealth countries).

Maybe he could appoint Arnold Palmer in charge of all this junk news he is so fond of spouting (except Arnold died eight years ago) or keep Matt Gaetz on as a truth keeper. If he was good enough for consideration to put in charge of the justice department, he might be good for this, right?

We need to record all of this — oh right, news outlets are recording it — and maybe that will be his undoing in the end. I sure hope so.

Cuthand’s columns prompt concerns

While I always take the time to read Mr. Cuthand’s articles, I’d like the StarPhoenix to be inclusive and also offer space for some kind of ‘Ukrainian country’ or ‘Eastern European view’ to further promote diversity of opinion.

Ukrainian Canadians are a minority group that has experienced being interned and discriminated against for generations, and yet we continue to work for a better Canada.

About Mr. Cuthand’s recent article, I was confused about what ‘Christian traditions’ he was referring to? I was deeply concerned by his use of ‘evolution’ in relation to any culture. Also, given there are hundreds of kinds of Christians; it’s inaccurate to think they’re all the same.

Similarly, I was concerned by his past article about ‘pretendians’ and his inclusion of Ms. Turpel-Lafond, especially given that her DNA test was accepted by a legal body in Canada that confirmed some Indigenous ancestry.

Not many people, not even in a lifetime, could accomplish the good works Ms. Turpel-Lafond achieved because few people could ever work hard enough to become a judge. Her deeds count more to me than words.

Most worrisome is Mr. Cuthand’s article about the smudge tent and his reference to the war in Ukraine. His contradictory comments about the ease of conquering Ukraine militarily clearly are inconsistent with the walloping Russian and now North Korean troops have taken on the battlefield.

Health-care workers earn patient’s praise

In the past few months, I have been cared for by many people in the health field: nurse practitioners, nurses, doctors, surgeons, technicians and support staff. In each case, I have been treated professionally, compassionately and respectfully. Thank you all for doing what you do, and for doing it so well.
