Online learning modules seek to raise neurodiversity awareness

An industry-specific training programme has been launched to support neurodiverse people working in construction firms.

A partnership led by the National Federation of Builders (NFB) has developed two online modules designed to build knowledge and skills around neurodiversity in the workplace.

The Neurodiversity in Construction Training Programme was created in conjunction with contractor Interclass, neurodivergent-led training business Genius Within, and the Construction Industry Training Board.

The free training for employers offers managers practical help with problems such as employee burnout or communication. It also highlights the need for colleagues to offer support to an employee when something new happens, such as the introduction of new software or a new manager.

Available through the Supply Chain Sustainability School learning pathways, training is through self-paced online modules and in-person training sessions led by expert facilitators.

Participants will explore topics such as ADHD and autism with dedicated modules on neurodivergence and acquired neurodivergence.

The NFB said it wanted to “foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for neurodivergent colleagues”.

The new training programme was developed after NFB research, published in 2023, revealed one in four construction workers considered themselves to have a neurodiverse condition.

One-third of neurodiverse workers said their condition had been a factor in them choosing to work in the construction industry, the study also found.

Richard Beresford, chief executive of the NFB, said: “Neurodiversity is largely prevalent among construction workers, yet the findings [from the 2023 study] suggested that stigma and barriers still exist.”

For instance, the research found that 36 per cent of neurodiverse construction workers have not told anyone at work about their condition, while 38 per cent believe there is little to no empathy for neurodiverse workers.

Beresford said the new online training “offers an important opportunity to create work environments where neurodiverse employees can thrive, enhancing wellbeing and productivity across the sector”.

The training sessions are now open for booking here.
