Americans Abroad Midweek Preview: Cardoso, Scally, and more

Soccer

A seven-match unbeaten run for Real Betis came to an end on Saturday, but a huge bounce-back opportunity comes midweek in Copa Del Rey action.

Johnny Cardoso and Real Betis visit Barcelona in the Copa Del Rey Round of 16. Cardoso logged 90 minutes on Saturday as Manuel Pellegrini’s squad suffered a 1-0 league defeat at the hands of Rayo Vallecano. The U.S. men’s national team midfielder remains linked with a potential exit from the club this month, but overall has continued to rack up consistent minutes in the starting lineup.

Cardoso now has 21 combined appearances under his belt this season and could add to that total at the Camp Nou on Wednesday. Real Betis hasn’t defeated Barcelona since the 2021-22 La Liga campaign, failing to win in each of the last seven head-to-head contests.

In Germany, Joe Scally and Borussia Moenchengladbach continue Bundesliga action. James Sands continues his spell with St. Pauli.

In England, Antonee Robinson and Fulham face a London Derby trip to West Ham United. Chris Richards and Crystal Palace take on Leicester City.

In Italy, Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah and AC Milan visit Como in Serie A action.

Elsewhere, Ricardo Pepi and PSV take on Zach Booth and Excelsior in KNVB Cup action. Tanner Tessmann and Mark McKenzie headline the American contingent in Coupe De France play.
