Air India increases baggage charges on Europe and UK routes

Air India has introduced new baggage charges for its flights to Europe and the UK, increasing costs for passengers who wish to check in a second bag. This change, effective from October 17, aligns the airline’s baggage policy with those of many Western carriers, reflecting a broader shift in its approach to fare structuring.

Under the revised policy, Air India’s economy class fares are now categorized into different “families,” with the most affordable option, called the “value” fare, including a 23 kg checked baggage allowance. However, passengers who need to check in an additional bag will need to opt for a higher fare class, with prices starting at around INR 4,000 for a one-way journey.

This move is in line with international airlines such as Lufthansa, which allows economy passengers only one checked bag, and British Airways, which offers varying fare levels that include up to two checked bags.

Air India, now owned by the Tata Group, has restructured its fare options to make them more competitive with the global market. The airline’s statement emphasized that the new structure offers a more affordable “value” fare that includes one piece of checked baggage with limited flexibility, while the “classic” and “flex” fares continue to offer more generous baggage allowances, with up to two 23 kg bags per passenger. These higher-tier fares also provide additional travel flexibility. The “value” fare is available only for economy class bookings.

This change is part of Air India’s broader efforts to modernize its offerings and align with international standards, especially as it seeks to improve service quality following its privatization. The airline currently operates 264 weekly flights between India, Europe, and the UK, making these routes a significant part of its operations.

The revised baggage policy marks a shift from Air India’s previous approach, when the state-owned carrier offered more generous baggage allowances to attract passengers, compensating for its lower-quality cabin service and punctuality issues.

Since the Tata Group took over, significant investments are being made to improve the airline’s fleet, services, and overall customer experience, though many passengers feel the timing of the baggage charge changes could have been better aligned with visible improvements in the airline’s services, such as the enhancement of its wide-body aircraft and on-time performance.

As Air India continues to evolve, the baggage policy update is expected to be part of a larger strategy to bring the airline’s services in line with international norms, though it remains to be seen how these changes will impact passenger satisfaction in the long term.
