Super Falcons watch: Babajide, Onumonu on fire; Ajibade returns; Birthday girl Nnadozie frustrates PSG

Several members of the Nigerian women’s national football team were in action for their respective clubs on Saturday and Sunday, as Soccernet.ng highlights the major talking points.

In the English Women’s Super League, Toni Payne was a second-half substitute for Everton as they stumbled to a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur inside the Gaughan Group Stadium in London.

Everton and Payne have only celebrated one league victory – a 1-0 win over city rivals Liverpool in November – since the Nigerian international joined the club on a free transfer in the summer.

In Spain, Rinsola Babajide scored her fourth league goal of the season as UD Tenerife and Atlético Madrid battled to a 2-2 draw in their Primera División Femenina clash.

Gift Monday saw every minute of action for Tenerife while Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade was a 60th-minute substitute for Atlético Madrid.

It was Ajibade’s first involvement in a month after recovering from an injury she sustained against Barcelona on November 9.

Earlier on Saturday, Edna Imade was among the goals as Granada strolled to a comfortable 5-0 win at home to Deportivo de la Coruna in the Spanish top flight.

In Australia’s A-League Women, Nigerian centre-back Onyinyechi Zogg stood between her opponents and goal until the 90th minute when Alana Murphy’s strike condemned her Perth Glory to a 1-0 defeat against Melbourne Victory.

Also on Saturday in France, Ifeoma Onumonu found the net for the sixth consecutive match but it ended as a mere consideration strike for Montpellier in the 4-2 loss at Dijon.

Onumonu scored Nigeria’s only goal in the Super Falcons’ 2-1 friendly defeat against France last week and had also made her mark against Saint-Étienne, Nantes, Paris FC, and Guingamp.

Also in the French Première Ligue, Jennifer Echegini and PSG were held to a 1-1 draw by Chiamaka Nnadozie and Paris FC in the highly-anticipated Paris derby.

Both teams had won each of their previous three games but had to settle for a share of the spoils at the Stade Charléty.

Goalkeeper Nnadozie would be particularly pleased to stop second-place PSG from securing a win over third-placed Paris FC a day before she celebrated her 24th birthday.
