Lionel Messi (37) ist um eine weitere Auszeichnung reicher. Der achtmalige Weltfußballer wurde in der Major League Soccer zum wertvollsten Spieler der Saison 2024 gekürt. Er setzte sich bei einer Wahl, die von den Profis, Klubs und Medienvertretern durchgeführt wurde, mit 38,43 Prozent der Stimmen durch. Der kolumbianische Angreifer Cucho Hernández (25) vom entthronten Meister Columbus Crew kam auf Platz zwei mit 33,7 Prozent der Stimmen.

Zu Ehren des argentinischen Weltmeisters bildeten 250 Nachwuchsfußballer von Inter Miami die Buchstaben MVP, seine drei Söhne warteten nach Vereinsangaben mit der Trophäe auf ihren berühmten Vater. „Es erfüllt mich mit Stolz, euch trainieren zu sehen“, sagte Messi an die gesamten Nachwuchskicker gerichtet: „Ich bin jeden Tag glücklich, hier zu sein.“

Messi spielt seit dem Sommer vergangenen Jahres bei dem Klub von Mitbesitzer David Beckham. Der Argentinier führte die Mannschaft, die neuerdings von seinem langjährigen Weggefährten Javier Mascherano trainiert wird, zum Gewinn des Supporters’ Shield als bestes Team der Hauptrunde. Messi war einer von fünf Spielern mit 30 Scorern, mit 19 Einsätzen absolvierte er allerdings mit Abstand die wenigsten Partien dafür. In den Playoffs der MLS war Inter Miami vorzeitig ausgeschieden. Messis Vertrag ist bis Ende 2025 gültig, die Vereinsbosse hoffen aber auf eine Verlängerung.
