The last episode of “The Late Late Show With James Corden” is almost here. The 44-year-old comedian has been at the helm of the show since March 2015, and he transformed it by combining music and comedy. Perhaps his tenure’s biggest legacy is “Carpool Karaoke,” which started as a bit but blew up with segments featuring people like Adele, and was even turned into its own spinoff show. While hosting, Corden continued to appear in films, including 2019’s “Cats,” 2020’s “The Prom,” and 2021’s “Cinderella.”
Back in January, Corden explained his reasoning for stepping back from the late-night show. “Look it’s not easy in any way to walk away from something that is so, I mean, I’ll never work in a better environment than the one I work in now,” he said on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” per “Entertainment Tonight.” “Nothing about leaving the show was to do with not enjoying it. I love it. But the truth is it became a very easy decision, because I always knew it was an adventure and I never, ever considered it to be the final destination.”

Harry Styles and Will Ferrell are the guests billed on the final episode of “The Late Late Show.” Styles and Corden are longtime friends and he’s made many appearances on the show before. Styles is also friends with the show’s producer, Ben Winston. Meanwhile, Ferrell was one of “The Late Late Show”‘s first guests, appearing in an episode during its premiere week in 2015.
Will One Direction Reunite on “The Late Late Show”?
One Direction’s previous appearances on “The Late Late Show” are much beloved by Directioners — including their “Carpool Karaoke” segment and when they played a high-octane game of tattoo roulette, which ended with Styles getting the show’s logo inked on his arm. Since the group went on hiatus in 2016, all four current members have been on the show solo as well. But despite rumors that all of One Direction would be on the final episode, on April 13, “The Late Late Show” announced via Twitter that the reunion speculation was false: “Nobody loves the boys more than us . . . but this story just isn’t true.”
Corden himself doubled down in an April 24 interview with “Extra,” saying, “You will not get that One Direction reunion. I don’t know where that came from.” He did joke about Styles’s involvement with the final episode, saying, “Look, we want to help [Harry] out, he’s struggling with sales, ticket sales, and album streams. He’s had a tough year. Harry said months ago, he said, ‘I better be on your last show.'”
Who Is Replacing James Corden on “The Late Late Show”?
“The Late Late Show” is seemingly not getting a new host like it did when Craig Ferguson left in 2014. Instead, Deadline reported in February that the show will be replaced with a new version of “@midnight,” a panel show that originally ran on Comedy Central. CBS did not comment on the report at the time and has yet to officially announce what show will fill Corden’s time slot.
