Marlborough Highways and FM Conway have each obtained £53.6m multi-year contracts from the London Borough of Camden for road maintenance and improvements.
Marlborough Highways will cover the north of the borough and FM Conway the south. The five-year contract will begin on 1 April with an option to extend it for another three years.
The contracts cover Camden Council’s estate roads and parks. Work will include surfacing, traffic management, street lighting and road marking as well as public realm projects including the maintenance and improvement of public highways.
VolkerHighways previously covered the work for the entire borough for £12m a year. Its contract was extended by two years despite Camden advertising for two new contractors in 2020.
Marlborough Highways’ area of responsibility includes residential communities and commercial districts around Hampstead Heath and Waterlow Park, as well as roads and public spaces in Belsize Park, Chalk Farm, Kentish Town and South Hampstead.
Marlborough Highways managing director Matthew Revell said: “Our expert team look forward to delivering a greener and cleaner environment for everyone to live, work and travel.”
The company claimed its operations in the borough will produce net-zero emissions, aligning with Camden Council’s carbon reduction plan to reach net zero by 2030.
Marlborough plans to use sustainable building materials and pioneer eco-friendly construction methods as well as electric vehicles, biofuel-powered plant and renewable energy supplies. All schemes will be assessed using a carbon footprint calculator.
The company also promised to divert 100 per cent of the construction waste from landfill.
