The Tesla-supplied battery will store electricity generated by Neoen’s Western Downs solar farm for transmission into the electricity network. The facility is expected to become operational from the Australian summer of 2024/2025. UGL will also install the battery itself.
UGL is a specialist in the design, construction and operation of renewable energy infrastructure. To date it has built 11 solar farms and installed three large-scale batteries.
The company is owned by Cimic Group – formerly Leighton Holdings – which is itself a subsidiary of German contractor Hochtief.
Cimic Group executive chairman Juan Santamaria said: “Cimic is actively pursuing the emerging opportunities driven by the energy transition and we’re proud to again work with Neoen. Battery energy storage systems provide critical grid support services, improving the reliability of energy supply for many Australians, as well as helping contribute to meet Australia’s net-zero aspirations.”
UGL managing director Doug Moss commented: “We enjoy a strong relationship [with Neoen] having recently completed the construction of the Victorian Big Battery near Geelong in Victoria, at the time the biggest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
